2009년 9월 26일 토요일. 뉴욕 현대미술관 (Museum of Modern Art = MoMA) 에 들러서 제이콥 로렌스의 '남부 흑인 이주 역사 시리즈 (Migration Series) 30장과 해당 그림 설명 (caption) 을 사진기에 담아 왔다. 홀수 작품은 Phillips Collection 에서, 짝수 작품은 Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) 에서 소장중. 1번부터 60번까지 완결.
미술관의 유리 액자를 사진에 담은 것이라 조명이 반사되는 것을 피하기가 힘들었다. 뉴욕 현대 미술관에서는 그림들을 다닥다닥 붙여놔서 높은 곳의 작품은 올려다보면서 찍느라고 더욱더 일그러졌다. 원작을 똑같이 사진에 담아오는 것은 어쩐지 '훔쳐오는듯한' 기분이 들기도 하는터라 조명때문에, 혹은 사진 찍는 각도때문에 약간 변형된 것이 오히려 사진 찍은 내 입장에서는 덜 미안하긴 하다. 캡션 부분도 별로도 사진을 찍은 것인데, 사진속의 문장을 읽고 외워서 타자를 치는 일은 그냥 영어 받아적기와 같은 막노동이었다. 이거, 거의 왕노가다로 만들어진 페이지이다. 하하.
1. During World War I, there was a great migration north by southern African Americans.
1. 제 1차 세계 대전 기간동안, 미국 남부의 흑인들이 북부로 대이동을 했다.
2. The war had caused labor shortage in nothern industry. Citizens of foreign countries were returning to their native lands.
2. 1차 대전이 일어나자 북부의 산업지대에서는 인력이 모자라게 되는데, 외국인 노동자들은 자기네 나라로 돌아갔다.
3. From every southern town migrants left by the hundreds to travel north.
3. 미국 남부의 방방곡곡에서 흑인들이 수백명씩 북쪽을 향해 떠나갔다.
4. All other sources of labor having been exhausted, the migrants were the last source.

20. In many of the communities, the Black press was read with great interest. It incouraged the movement.

22. Migrants left. They did not feel safe. It was not wise to be found on the streets late at night. They were arrested on the slightest provocation.

42. To make it difficult for the migrants to leave they were arrested en masse. They often missed the trains.

43. In a few section of the South leaders of both black and white communities met to discuss ways of making the South a great place to live.

56. The African American professionals were forced to follow their clinets in order to make a living.
